"Bike-to-Work Week" in the Fairbanks North Star Borough
.WHEREAS, Alaskans, as well as millions of Americans, are encouraged to experience the benefits of bicycling through educational programs, community events, trail work days and charity rides; and
WHEREAS, the education of cyclists and motorists in legal and safe operation of bicycles helps ensure the safety and comfort of all users; and
WHEREAS, the Fairbanks Cycle Club and numerous businesses are promoting bicycling as a healthy activity as well as an environmentally friendly alternative to the automobile; and
WHEREAS, bicycling is a venerable technology that continues to evolve and is part of the solution to many of this nation's transportation and health challenges: it is well known that obesity, air pollution, traffic congestion, noise and fuel dependence would decline if more Americans turn to the bicycle; and
WHEREAS, over 22 percent of all motor vehicle trips Americans take are less than one mile long, and 50 percent of the working population’s work commute is five miles or less, an easily bikeable distance; and
WHEREAS, If the average American biked to work or shopping once every two weeks instead of driving, nearly one billion gallons of gasoline waste products could be prevented from entering the atmosphere every year; and
WHEREAS, bicycles are an integral part of the multi-modal transportation system planned for by the Fairbanks North Star Borough and its state and federal partners; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Fairbanks North Star Borough recognize May 22-26 as "Bike-to-Work Week".
