MOUNTAIN BIKERS VS ROADIES Mountain Bikers vs Roadies -- June 9th, 2001 -- mileage varied The race came off without a hitch and had good volunteer support, lots of prizes, and great weather. Unfortunately, only 5 people showed up for this classic race. The concept is easy: starting from the intersection of Old Murphy Dome Road and the Elliot Highway, roadies take off down the hill, turn onto the Steese, ride up to Cleary Summit and back. Meanwhile, the mountain bikers go overland, following a trail that goes up to Pedro Dome, then follow the dirt road that goes to the same turn-around point at Cleary Summit. The mountain bikers ride about 15 miles total, with 1400 feet of elevation gain, whereas the roadies bike about 24 miles, with 1600 feet elevation gain. This year, owing mostly to wet conditions and puddles, the roadies prevailed with a two minute lead over the mountain bikers. Following the event, there was much consumption of juice, sodas, and cookies... Thanks to the great volunteers: Malcolm McEwen - (offroad) course marking Simon Rakower of All Weather Sports - prizes, wise counsel Bob Schlentner - turn around point and traffic control Paul Berry - Road course markers, race timing and... two other volunteers that I don't remember that assisted with intersection traffic control.
