15TH ANNUAL ALL WEATHER SPORTS "DEATH RIDE"
15th Annual AWS Death Ride -- June 24th, 2001 -- about 20 miles


This years race was a hot, sunny one.  The heat worked well for some, 
and not so well for others.  The cooler full of soda was treated like 
a long lost friend by everyone...

The Death Ride course takes riders up Smallwood Tr, a steep climb.  A 
fun, fast (and treacherous) descent dumps riders squarely into a swamp, 
which gets everyone equally dirty, and loads shoes full of gunk.  The 
goo is thigh-deep in places.  Exiting the swamp, there is a long, 
arduous uphill grind that is better to push up than ride.  This part 
probably only takes 20 minutes, but it feels like hours.  Arriving at 
the top, riders can once again ride.  Gilmore Trail is still pretty 
rough this far back though, so the going is slow for a few miles.  A 
few intersections later, things have improved, and the pace picks up.  
Finally, riders meet up with pavement, and after a short (and unwelcome) 
climb, there is a long descent, ending at North Hubernite.  Riders 
plunge into the woods on a trail that stops being rideable after a few 
hundered feet, and requires pushing for about 5 minutes.  The trail 
ends, and once again riders are blazing downhill, following Tungsten, 
a small dirt road until it intersects on a sharp bend with (I never 
can remember the name of it).  The road ends, and becomes trail once 
again, and the trail is interrupted by a construction site that requires 
getting off the bike to push around.  Hopping back on the bike, riders 
blaze downhill, stopping only long enough to get over a log barricade 
and onto Juniper, which is followed to the finish near Chena Hot Springs 
Road, a scant 100 yards from the start.

If only the course could be ridden as quickly as it is described...
