MURPHY DOME TIME TRIAL Murphy Dome Time Trial -- May 2, 2002 -- 12 Miles The Fairbanks Cycle Club held it's traditional first race of the summer season Thursday, May 2nd. Summer seems a long way away still, and the Murphy Dome Time Trial was very chilly. The overnight snow (inch, two inches?) had completely melted away, and the roads were dry. The course is relatively short and flat -- a 12 mile out and back, from the gravel pit near Spinach Creek Road to the end of the pavement and back. The few rolling hills seem inconsequential on the way out, but coming back they seem to get bigger. The big factor in this race was the wind, which didn't seem like much of a tailwind going out (it was swirly, and frequently from the side), but proved to be the nasty headwind going back. Still, Kevin Petrone handily won the mens division, and Gail Koepf took first in womens. Dangerous duo Doug and Sue Stewart won the tandem event, and placed the top time of the night. Racers started at 30 second intervals, and pace lines or drafting was not permitted. There were many volunteers on hand, and to these folks we all say "THANK YOU!"
