SUMMIT HILL CLIMB Summit Hill Climb -- May 16, 2002 -- 1.9 Miles The hill climb is an arduous race, pretty much anaerobic from the start. In this particular race, racers started near the bottom of Summit Drive off Farmers Loop and raced to the top, where Summit intersects with Skyridge Road. The steepest grade on the course is 11%, and this takes a toll on the racers. Lungs simply cannot keep up with the body's screaming demand for oxygen, and by the time the racers hit the top, they are wheezing and hacking, and grateful for the finish line. Conditions were ideal tonight, with little or no breeze, and temperature around 60 degrees or less. The twelve participants could not have asked for better. Racers were started thirty seconds apart, with the slowest riders in front and the fastest bringing up the rear, giving the fast riders people to chase. Henry Irving edged out powerhouse Doug Stewart, posting a time of 10:37, with an average speed of 10.7 miles per hour. Sue Stewart finished first in the womens division, and placed 3rd overall. Ever his own man, Liam Wescott chose a mountain bike for his weapon of the evening, and charged up the hill in good fashion and good humor. He was out doing some trail research and decided to join the pack up the hill. Thanks to the race organizers and course volunteers, the event was safe, fun, and even tasty (cookies and juice were served afterwards.)
