OFFROAD RACE SERIES All Weather Sports Stage Race -- May 24-27, 2002 -- 6 Stages The 2002 Mountain Bike Stage Race was an excellent event, and really is the flagship mountain bike event of the season. There are many volunteers who contribute effort to make the stage race happen, but special thanks go to Rocky Reifenstuhl for putting it all together, rounding up people, volunteers, etc. Stage one, Friday May 24th, was a hill climb event. Most riders were sporting their mountain bikes, but there was at least one cross bike in the mix. Participants raced from the old greenhouses on Ester Dome Road to the top of Ester Dome. At the top, racers followed the marathon trail around the first group of antennas, then back Ester Dome Road, finishing near the top of the Alder Chute. Stage two, bright and early the next morning at 9:00 AM, was the first cross country event. Racers went up Moose Mountain road, all the way to the top. Turning on to the powerline, racers sped down hills and grunted up climbs, all the way to "E-Battery" road, then zoomed down to Old Murphy Dome Road. Turning left, the course involved some fine descents and ruts, and more than a few mud puddles. Then, after a short climb, riders turned left into the woods and followed a combination of really bumpy single-track, and double track of various conditions. Miles later, riders emerged on Moose Mountain Road. Senior men continued on up Spinach Creek to Old Murphy Dome Road, and turning again into the woods, following the same trail as before, back to Moose Mountain Road, then to the finish. All others just proceeded to the finish near the Moose Mountain Clubhouse, forgoing the torture of a second lap. Stage three, also on the 25th, was staged at the Moose Mountain clubhouse parking lot, immediately following the mornings race. The event was an observed trials course, that proved to be easy for almost everyone. Contestants proceeded up and over a low teeter-totter, over a short metal ramp consisting of two car stands, across a sixteen foot 2"x6" up on concrete blocks, then wove through an obstacle course of 2-liter bottles, across an old 15" car tire, then attempted to stay in a 6' by 10' rectangle painted on the ground for ten seconds, with no dabs. What made the course easy was that contestants got three attempts at each section. Three failures at one section got the contestant 30 seconds added to their time. Stage four met on Merlin Lane, at Rocky and Gail's house, on Sunday the 26th. The event was a senic trail through the woods, of less than a mile. Contestants first rode the trail to get a guess of how long it would take to ride two laps. Then, without cyclometers or watches, riders did their best to make their predicted time. The difference between the guessed time and actual time was the amount of time added to each persons overall time. Stage five met at the junction of the Healy Intertie and Gold Hill Road. The event was a dirt criterium on a short, dusty course. All contestants were shown the course, and invited to ride it until they were comfortable with it. Then, divisions of riders raced in a "Miss and Out", where the last person crossing the start/finish line each lap was pulled out. Thus, the last person left got a time of 0:00, the runner up got 0:30, and so on. Stage six met at 8:00AM on the morning of the 27th at the Vallata, at the intersection of Goldstream and Ballaine roads. Racers proceeded up the hill, across the airstrip, up along ridgetops consisting mostly of bumps, clumps of tundra and roots, all the way to Old Murphy Dome Road. Contestants then proceeded towards the Elliot Highway, but turned onto the pipeline easement towards Fox. The finish line was the creek at the bottom of the final hill. Later in the day, participants got together at Rocky and Gail's house for a little yard work, a barbecue, refreshments, and pilfering through the prize box.
