CRIPPLE CREEK TIME TRIAL Cripple Creek TT -- July 11th, 2002 -- Approx 16 miles The perfect pavement on the perfect evening - what better way to introduce a new bicycle race? The Fairbanks Cycle Club hosted a time trial bicycle race Thursday night, in the Cripple Creek subdivision. Racers were treated to perfectly smooth pavement, with few, if any, seasonal cracks. Most roads in the Fairbanks area sport cracks, bumps, patched holes, or the worst, chip-seal. These flaws in the roadway lead to flats, bent rims, injuries. Even if nothing goes awry, the rider has to ride around these hazards, slowing the rider down. Not so on Thursday night. The course used in the Cripple Creek Time Trial consisted of Cripple Creek road and Isberg road, both paved within the last year. The result? Happy racers! The evening was as good as anyone could ask for, given where we live. Nice temperature, great road, great turnout, and no rain (until after the race). The only drawback was the mosquitoes... The top finisher of the evening was the ever dangerous (but really friendly) Kevin Petrone, with a time of 29:07, competing in the Expert Class. Following in second place was Jed Brown, the "youngster" of the evening at 19 years old. Jed posted a time of 31:12, also competing in the Expert Class. In third place was Pete Wilda, with a great finish of 32:42. Pete finished as the top Sport Class racer, ahead of other Expert Class racers. The red lantern prize went to "Excellent" Ed Buoncore, who finished with a time of 40:24 in the Sport Class division. For his fine finish and also his assistance in driving volunteers around the race course, Excellent Ed won a time-trial aerobar from All Weather Sports. With that on his bike, we think that Ed will leave Dan Harris in the dust. As usual, a great time was had by all, and some new faces were seen. Dan Harris brought an entourage of volunteers along, and without them, we'd have been lost. The race organizer was Tom Clark, who was grateful for all the help and the nice turnout. Tom promises to start writing down the names of the volunteers, so that he can give them credit...
