OFFROAD RACE SERIES
	Roadies vs Mountain Bikes -- Aug 1st, 2002 -- 25/15 miles


The annual Roadies versus Mountain Bikes took place Thursday, August 1st.  
The race is unique in all the events offered by the Fairbanks Cycle Club
throughout the season.  This race pits road cyclists directly against
mountain bikers, an unusual pairing.  Everyone starts at the same time,
from the same place, race to the turnaround cone, and heads back to the
finish.  First one back has bragging rights, and is the winner.

This years race was postponed a week due to weather, and the excellent
conditions Thursday evening were well worth the wait.

The course for the "roadies" is about 25 miles long, starting from 3.5
mile Elliot Highway, down the hill past the Fox weigh station, left onto
the Steese, and up to the top of Cleary Summit.  There, riders rode around
a turnaround cone, and proceeded back to the start area.  Meanwhile, the
mountain bikers followed a rugged trail accross the hills up to Pedro
Dome, and over to Cleary Summit.  Using the same turnaround cone, mountain
bikers headed back to the start area, for a total of about 15 miles.

The dry conditions favored the mountain bikers this year, the top three
finishers all being mountain bikers.  Rocky Reifenstuhl finished first
overall, with an excellent time of one hour, one minute and eleven
seconds.  Bjorn Flora finished a strong second, coming in only six seconds
later.  Tom Clark took third place, finishing in one hour, eight minutes.

Doug Stewart finished as the lead "roadie", fourth overall, with a time of
one hour, eleven minutes and twenty three seconds.

Sue Stewart was the top woman finisher, racing as a "roadie" with a time
of one hour, eighteen minutes and thirty four seconds.

Race organizer Tom Clark would like to thank the great folks at All
Weather Sports on Geist Road for providing excellent prizes, sound advice,
and help with setting up the course; local tri-athlete Kevin Petrone, who
volunteered to handle timing; and "Smilin'" Gail Koepf, who picked up
course markers.
