OFFROAD RACE SERIES Generic Off-Road Race #2 -- Aug 22nd, 2002 -- approx 8 miles Though the turnout was small, the fun factor was high. The rain that had persisted for days let up just long enough for the mud to turn back into dirt and for riders to enjoy the course without getting rained on. Riders started on the Intertie on Henderson Road, just off Gold Hill Road, proceeding down the Intertie towards Ester about a quarter mile, turning uphill just before the end. The trail wound upwards through the woods, following a double-track that turned into a 4X4 road, working steadily up the hill, past a few trail intersections. Finally, the climb topped out -- sort of. Riders went down a short ways past the mine, through a saddle, and up again. Small chain-ring, 1st gear, this climb is on the edge of some riders limits, but most were able to pedal up it. At the top, the double track turned right, and became very narrow single- track, winding downhill through the aspen forest. Most logs had been cleared from the trail beforehand by ride organizer Tom Clark, but there were plenty of wet roots to throw tires sideways. The single-track threaded through the woods, going mostly downhill, through saddles, tight corners and over a few logs. It finished with a high speed descent followed by an impossibly steep thirty foot climb, leading back to the main trail going uphill. Following the signs, riders took the upper course again, relishing the fun singletrack. Back at the cars we ate and drank, and wondered why more folks hadn't shown up... Thanks to volunteer Pete Wilda for picking up the course markers, without even being asked. He showed up at the finish as everyone was eating cookies and drinking sodas. Pete devised a "quiver" that mounts on the down tube, which works extremely well for carrying pin flags. The stakes with arrows get carried on the rear rack.
