THURSDAY NIGHT ROAD RACE Marcia Burnside Memorial Time Trial -- May 1, 2003 -- 20 Kilometers Thursday, May 1st proved to be a wonderful evening for the Fairbanks Cycle Club to usher in the 2003 summer racing season. Turnout was good, with seventeen racers competing in the Marcia Burnside Memorial Time Trial. Marcia Burnside was instrumental to the Fairbanks Cycle Club, and devoted much of her time and energy to both events and behind the scenes paperwork for the club. Marcia passed away earlier this year. Racers assembled at the first gravel pit on Murphy Dome road Monday evening. There was much chatting and carrying on, as this was the first time that many of the participants had seen one another since last fall. Then, racers started at thirty second intervals, pedaling hard into a moderate headwind. After a short but agonizing six-mile ride, racers hit the turnaround point and steamed back towards the finish. With most of the energy already used up, some of the short hills on the way back seemed excruciatingly long and steep. The finish line was a welcome sight for everyone. First place women finisher Gail Koepf made it look easy, never losing her trademark smile, finishing in 36:23. Second place finisher Christine Matson was nearly four minutes behind Koepf, and almost a minute ahead of the 3rd place women finisher. Top men's finisher Dave Dohnal burned the course up with an excellent time of 30:38, and even managed to look fresh and unscathed at the finish. Dohnal edged out the "brash and obnoxious" Rocky Reifenstuhl by a mere four seconds. Reifenstuhl looked almost as fresh as Dohnal at the finish. In the "aww, that's nice" category, man-of-steel Bruce Gard rode with his sweetie Lynn Gilbert. The couple tied for last place, but they were out for a nice evening ride instead of racing. Thanks to Gar and Jan Pessel for putting on the race, and to the various volunteers who helped manage the course, making the evening a safe and fun event. More volunteers were on hand, including the ever-present Liam Wescott and another nice lady who we didn't get the name of.
