THURSDAY NIGHT ROAD RACE
	Nordale Team Time-Trial -- May 29, 2003 -- 20 Kilometers	


The Fairbanks Cycle Club held its annual Nordale Team Time Trial on
Thursday, May 29th.  Anybody who was outdoors on Thursday knows that it
was a glorious day, and the evening was perfect.  Aside from a mild wind
from the northwest (that felt like a gale-force headwind on the return leg
of the course), the conditions were perfect.

In a two-person team time-trial, team partners take turns in the lead,
swapping frequently.  While one is in the lead, the other rests behind the
leader, getting strength back for another high-speed "pull".

Racers started at thirty second intervals on Nordale Road, near Chena Hot
Springs Road.  They then raced to the other end, near Badger Road, turned
around and returned to the start area.

In Thursdays race, the three fastest times of the evening were held by a
solo racer and two cheater, uh, tandem bikes In the tandem division, Doug
and Sue Stewart posted a time of 25:37, followed by Rocky Reifenstuhl and
Gail Koepf with 26:14.  Dave Dohnal raced solo, and finished slightly
ahead of Rocky and Gail with 26:07.

The top finisher in the two-riders, two-bikes division was Fred Raymond
and Rick Johnson with a time of 26:40, edging out Tom Clark and Pete Wilda
by eight seconds.  Bringing up third was TG Taylor and Luis Infante with
28:07.

The team of Brandon Acheson and Chris Shaw suffered a setback when Acheson
got a flat tire.  Shaw gamely forged ahead, and posted a respectable time
of 29:08 for the team.

Thanks to the efforts of organizer Kay Kindt, everyone had a great time,
and enjoyed homemade rhubarb pie, cookies and chilled soft-drinks
afterwards.
