ROADIES VS. MOUNTAIN BIKERS Road Weenies vs. Filthy Mountain Bikers -- June 12, 2003 -- 25/15 miles Ten participants turned up for this fun race, a low turnout especially considering the gorgeous weather. Clear blue skies, and mild temperatures suited the evening quite nicely to the race. The winds were a little strong, but a headwind in one direction turns into a tailwind on the way back... Roadies went down the Elliot Highway, turned left onto the Steese and rode up to Cleary Summit, turned around and came back. Meanwhile, the mountain bikers went overland, following the Silver Fox trail around Pedro Dome and to the same turnaround point at Cleary Summit, turning around and heading back. The return trip was faster for both road bikers and mountain bikers, as the terrain is mostly downhill. This year, the road weenies were given a ten-minute handicap in order to make the competition a little closer. In years past, dry conditions always seemed to favor the mountain bikers. Whether ten minutes is the correct handicap or not is up for discussion... Young Mr. Tyson Flaharty claimed a win for the Roadie camp, riding the 25 mile course in 1:12:51. The always amazing Rocky Reifenstuhl took second place, riding for the mountain bike camp, finishing in 1:13:32. Brandon Acheson, a roadie, finished third in 1:16:52. Carol Stewart was the first woman finisher with a time of 1:28:39 (road), and smilin' Gail Koepf was only a minute behind on her mountain bike. Matias Saari started out on his road bike but got a flat near the start. A friend was following him to take pictures, so he got a quick ride back to the start and grabbed his mountain bike (and gave chase, finishing in 1:29:02. Thanks to Ed Buoncore and Fred Harbison who volunteered for timing duty, to Pete Wilda took care of the turnaround point and picked up all the course markers, and to Tom Clark for putting the race together.
