17TH ANNUAL DEATH RIDE
	17th Annual Death Ride -- June 22, 2003 -- 20 miles


Not only did Jim Lokken not die on the Fairbanks Cycle Club's annual Death
Ride mountain bike race, he set a new course record in the process.

His time of 1:26:22 was about two minutes faster than the previous mark,
and over four minutes faster than second place finisher Rocky Reifenstuhl.

Course conditions were fast, with the water level in the swamp a bit lower
than in previous years, and the Gilmore Trail was dry and packed.  Few of
the riders were even waist deep in the swamp, although Bob Perkins did
find the one really deep hole.  "When the water got up to my chin, I
almost dropped the bike and started to swim for it", Perkins said after
the race.  "But I didn't want to lose my bike!"

A total of 33 riders entered the race, many of them just out for a fun
afternoon of total misery, battling mosquitoes and mud holes in the
swamp, pushing their bikes up a mile long hill that was too steep to
ride, and trying to negotiate the infamous "rabbit hole" trail that has
so many twists, turns, and obstacles that staying on the bike is not an
option.

As race organizer Doug Burnside said, "It just goes to prove that there
are a lot of really crazy people in this town."
