THURSDAY NIGHT RACE Marcia Burnside Memorial Time Trial -- May 12th, 2005 -- About 16 miles The Fairbanks Cycle Club held the first race of the summer on Thursday May 12 on Cripple Creek and Isberg Roads. It was a beautiful evening for racing. Local UAF nordic skiing star Tyson Flaharty won the Marcia Burnside Memorial Time Trial with a time of 29:57. He was followed by Brett Tack with a time of 31:04 and Rocky Reifenstuhl in 31:37. There were a total of 12 racers in the time trial. Melissa Lewis, also a top local nordic ski racer was 7th overall and was the first woman with a time of 35:04. Racers started near the intersection of Cripple Creek and the Parks Highway, and raced out to the first turnaround near Potter Road. Heading back, they then turned up Isberg and climbed to the last turnaround, where Isberg meets Chena Ridge Road. Some recovery was possible on the descent down Isberg, before making the turn back on to Cripple Creek and returning to the finish, just shy of the start point. Thanks to race organizer Christine Matson and volunteers Gar and Tom Clark for helping with timing and to Jan Pessel helping at the turnaround. Thanks also to Joy Ritter who entered the event under peer pressure (I bet it was Tom), went out and just had a nice evening ride, yelling encouragement to all the racers.
