THE ALASKA CLUB TOUR OF FAIRBANKS ROAD STAGE RACE Tour of Fairbanks Road Stage Race -- June 9,10,11,12, 2005 -- 5 stages Once again, the Tour of Fairbanks Road Race was a smashing success, thanks to the organizational efforts of Dan Harris and Ed Buoncore, local residents and amazing race promoters. The international field of atheletes (we can say that because there were quite a few of our Canadian brethren there) spanned all sorts of ability levels and there was racing a-plenty for everyone. This year the criterium (read "meat grinder") was abandoned in favor of an extra circuit race. No doubt some people missed the criterium, but others were heard making various sounds of relief. Stage 1 was a 3.4 mile hill climb, from the Felix Pedro monument on the Steese highway to Cleary Summit. Stage 2 was a circuit race starting at Anne's Greenhouse pullout, going out Sheep Creek to Goldstream to Ballaine, to Yankovitch to Miller Hill, down to Sheep Creek and back to Anne's Greenhouse. Cat 1 men did two laps, everyone else did a single lap of the course. Stage 3 was another circuit race, again meeting at Anne's Greenhouse pullout. This was an out-and-back, probably turning around near the Ballaine road intersection. This writer isn't sure what the course actually was... Stage 4 was a time-trial stage, meeting at the Chatanika lodge. The pavement in the area is in excellent condition, total FREE of any chip-seal surface. This made for happy riders. The racers went out about six miles to the turnaround and came back to the finish. Stage 5 was the Engineer Hill Circuit race, starting at the senic lookout at Hagelbarger and Steese Expressways. Racers went down Haglebarger to the Old Steese, down to Goldstream and back up on the Steese Expressway. Each circuit was about 7 miles. Cat 1 men did 10 laps, everyone else did seven.
