YOUTH SERIES MTN BIKE RACE #1
   Youth Series Race #1 -- June 10, 2006 -- Distance Varies

The first of three mountain bike races for kids sponsored by the Fairbanks
Cycle Club was held on the grassy, gentle 1-mile circuit around the
dogmushers field at the Jeff Studdert race grounds on Saturday. About 60
people turned out to cheer or participate as the smoky air cleared and the
sun shone for all 4 races. The times for all classes were faster than last
year, evidence that fitness levels were higher after riding several Monday
nights at Birch Hill as part of the Junior Cycling program.

The Kindergarten-2nd grade class did 1 lap around the 1-mile course. Colin
Lease led the field by almost 1 minute. Second was Tristan O'Donoghue and a
close third was Quinn Vinlove. Zack Lewis, second son of ski and bike phenom
Melissa Lewis, was fourth. Fifth graders Montana Troyer and Nick Fisher rode
out of their age class in the 1-lap race.

The most contested race of the day was in the 3rd-4th grade class with Joe
Bue and Tommy O'Donoghue  battling throughout the 2-lap race. Joe narrowly
beat Tommy  in a photo-finish sprint. Jordan Lewis was 3rd, Peter Button
4th, and Luke Button finished the 1st of 2 laps before dropping out after a
collision with another racer.

Riley Troyer charged through 3 laps in the 5th-6th grade class and won by 25
seconds. Kuba Grezda was 2nd and Cory Johnson was 3rd. Bobby Signor was 4th
and Ryan Senkow was 5th.

The largest field of riders competed in the 7th grade and up class. Kipp
Wilkinson smoked the 4-lap race in under 18 minutes. Jeff Bue was less than
a minute behind in 2nd and Neill Toelle was only 17 seconds behind Jeff.
Dorian Granger was 4th, Simon Viavant was 5th, and Madeline Button, 6th,
tried to overtake Viavant at the finish but could not find room to pass.
Aven Bross finished 7th.
