YOUTH SERIES RACE #2 Youth Series Race #2 -- July 8th -- Dist Varies The 2nd in the series of 3 mountain bike races for kids sponsored by the Fairbanks Cycle Club narrowly dodged the rain clouds on Saturday at UAF’s West Ridge ski trails. The race attracted a surprisingly good turn out after a week of steady rain in Fairbanks. About 40 people cheered on the 25 racers. The Kindergarten–2nd-grade class raced 3 loops on the road from the warm-up hut around the satellite dish. The 3rd-grade and older classes raced a hilly 1.6-mile circuit course that was slow because of soggy but firm trails, especially in the lower sections. The Kindergarten–2nd-grade class did three laps around a flat 0.37-mile loop. The first three riders to the finish line were in the same order as in the first Youth Series Race: Colin Lease won by about 30 seconds, and as in the previous race, Tristan O’Donoghue sprinted Quinn Vinlove to the finish line for 2nd and 3rd places. In their first bike race, Ashley Plummer came in 4th and Andrew Sheets was 5th. The race was close for the first three places in the 3rd–4th-grade class with Elijah McMorrow taking 1st by 7 seconds over Luke Button in 2nd, and Joe Bue was 3rd, 13 seconds behind Luke. Austin Plummer was 4th, and Erica Signor, Tommy O’Donoghue, and Peter Button finished within 5 seconds of each other in 5th–7th places. Daniel Remington took 1st by almost 30 seconds in his first mountain bike race in the 5th–6th-grade class. Ryan Senkow was 2nd and tied with Courtney Bue, who raced in this younger age class. Bobby Signor was 10 seconds behind in 3rd and Nicole Plummer was 4th. Garrett Sheets had a malfunction with his chain, but gamely managed to finish the race in 5th place. The field of riders in the 7th-grade-and-older class was the most competitive with a tight group leading on the 1st lap. Wyatt Mayo gapped the field on the 2nd lap and stretched his lead to 1 minute at the finish. Kipp Wilkinson, the previous race winner, was 2nd and chased by Robert Hovda, who almost caught Kipp at the finish line. Neill Toelle finished 4th and was followed by Coty Mayo, Kyle Hanson, and Aven Bross, in that order. Despite the squishy trails and dirt-splattered bikes, there were lots of smiling weary faces after the race. All the racers took home prizes thanks to the generous donations of our sponsors: Alaska Chocolate House, Beaver Sports, Goldstream Sports, Great Land Sports, and Raven Cross Country. The 3rd and final race in the series will be held at Birch Hill on 19 August at 10 am.
