THREE HILL RACE Three Hill Race -- May 20th -- about 10 miles Turn out was high with a lot of fast riders. Tyson has set the standard! The race starts off on Summit drive which is 1.89 miles long and has 784 feet of elevation gain. The twist to it is that the 1/4 mile stretch up from Aspen Heights is a DOT measured 13% grade, which is almost 200 feet of elevation gain. So 25% of the total elevation gain is achieved in 1/8 of the total hill climb distance of Summit. Then, if you slack off a little you can almost catch your breath as you skirt across the ridge on Skyline drive to drop down Skyridge. The return climb back up Skyridge is the shortest at 1.54 miles long with 645 feet of elevation gain. It starts off steep and then pretends to ease up on you a little only to steepen up sharply at the end. Then you descend Skyline which seems easy enough except the hairpin turn at Aquila slows you down which causes you to have to reaccelerate, a painful chore at this point. Of course then you get to grind your way back up Skyline which is 1.91 miles long and has 880 feet of elevation gain. Skyline is just a long steady climb that punishes you dearly at the end with a steep climb that results in a false finish only to reveal the final grind to the real finish line. The whole ride is a leg burning, lung busting, heart crushing suffer fest of the most glorious kind!
