Race Results for the Third Youth Series Mountain Bike Race, 4 August 2007


About 40 people turned out for a sunny morning mountain bike race on the
UAF West Ridge ski trails.  Rain has forced the cancellation of this
August race in previous years, but despite light showers in the early
morning hours this year, the trails were firm and in great condition. 
Eleven racers competed in 4 age categories for the last race of the
season, and all took home prizes generously donated by Beaver Sports,
Goldstream Sports, and Raven Cross Country.

The most hotly contested race was in the kindergarten to second-grade
class.  The youngest class did 3 laps on the road and trail from the
Warm-up hut to the satellite dish. Lars Vinlove got off to a bad start
by falling 2 times on the first lap. He picked himself up off the trail
at least 4 times and still managed to finish.  Emma Jerome and Tjarn
Bross took advantage of Lars' problems and road steadily together.  On
the second lap Tjarn got serious, stopped chatting with her friend, and
put a gap on Emma.  But by the third lap, Emma almost reeled in Tjarn.

The third-fourth grade boys struggled through 1 lap on a hilly 1.6 mile
course designed for the older age groups. The course included the
powerline trail, the Potato Field, Lighted Trail, and Little Whizzy
Loop. Quinn Vinlove was first and Clayton Schrader was second.

Fifth-sixth grade boys did 2 laps on the same tough course, but it was
obviously a little easier for the older boys.  Brandon Schrader came in
first and Landon Buma was second.

Seventh grade and higher kids made up the largest class in the race and
all made easy work of 3 laps on the 1.6-mile course.  Kyle Hanson was
first, Aven Bross was second, Joey Tallan was third, and Ryan Senkow was
fourth.

Junior Cycling will meet at Birch Hill Ski Trails for the next 2 Mondays
at 7 pm.  The last ride of the season will be 13 August.
