THURSDAY NIGHT OFFROAD RACE Amanita Hill Climb -- July 17, 2008 -- 7.2 miles Local endurance phenomenon Jeff Oatley smashed the record on the Fairbanks Cycle Club Amanita Hill Climb held Thursday night at Amanita Road. The record previously set by Jim Lokken in 2006 of 37:49 broke a long standing record held by Bruce Gard set in the mid 1990's. Oatley is just coming off a win at the Fireweed 200 where he also set a new record. This year's Amanita Course was as usual punctuated with a gnarly, rutted downhill section that made second place finisher Andrew Wappet's ride a special one as he rode in on a cyclocross bike. Wappet is new to the Fairbank's Mt. bike racing scene and he's showing he has a great deal of potential.
