ALASKA COFFEE ROASTERS MOUNTAIN BIKE STAGE RACE -- 5 STAGES
     MTB Stage Race -- June 5th and 6th, 2009 -- 5 stages


Reese Hanneman was the class of the field at the 12th Alaska Coffee 
Roasting Co. Mountain Bike Stage Race, defending his title Saturday by 
winning four of the five events.

The only stage that crossed Hanneman up was predicting his time on a 
1-kilometer course - and by then his victory in the expert division was 
assured.

Hanneman opened the series with a convincing win of 2 minutes, 9 seconds 
over Tyson Flaharty on Friday night at the Ester Dome Hill Climb. 
Flaharty was likely the only mountain biker who could have challenged 
Hanneman on Saturday morning at Moose Mountain, but he chose to go road 
cycling instead.

Hanneman, one of the nation's top junior Nordic skiers, then claimed the 
13-mile cross country race in 1 hour, 3 minutes and 33 seconds, with 
Jeff Oatley 44 seconds back and a directionally challenged Logan 
Hanneman - Reese's younger brother - 1:24 behind.

After that, Reese Hanneman was perfect, along with five others, in the 
five-obstacle trials course.

Hanneman also was first in the "miss and out" event, in which each 
division's racers repeatedly circled a one-kilometer course and the 
biker in last place was eliminated until only one person remained.

Despite all those successes, Hanneman - along with organizer Rocky 
Reifenstuhl - was worst at predicting how long it would take to bike 1K. 
Each was off by 42 seconds.

"I'm always way faster than I predict," Hanneman said. "So this year I 
said I should slow down and I was way slower."

Oatley only missed his predicted time by one second, and that helped him 
secure second place in the expert division by 17 seconds over Logan 
Hanneman.

Reese Hanneman's cumulative time was 1:35:45, followed by Oatley at 
1:39:38 and Logan Hanneman in 1:39:55.

Heather Best easily won the women's division for the first time in 
1:59:09. Laura LeBlanc edged Katelyn Bennett by 17 seconds for second 
place in 2:14:42.

"I'm always out of town because of work," Best said about not completing 
the stage race in the past. "This is the first time I've been around."

Richard Steele won the sport division in 2:07:18.
