HILLY HUNDERED ROAD RACE -- GOLDSTREAM SPORTS ROAD RACE Hilly Hundered -- July 19th, 2009 -- 100 miles The second annual Hilly Hundred was run on Sunday. The race starts at Fox and races up the Elliot Highway 50 miles and turns back to the start/finish line. Tyson Flaharty was the solo event winner in a time of 5 hours, 8 minutes. The next closest competitor was Will Coleman, around 15 minutes behind. The day was warm, with a slight cloud cover. Starting earlier helped with the heat. At about 8.5 miles into the race, Tyson gapped the field and road alone for the rest of the way. At the turnaround Tyson could feel the other competitors breathing down his neck, so he pushed harder to increase the distance. The elevation gain was around 9000 feet, with some very big hills. The headwind on the way home provided some cool relief, but forced the riders to work harder. The volunteers were a hardy bunch. One volunteer spent over 5 hours waiting for all of the competitors to make it through the halfway point. Many other volunteers helped with follow cars, feed stations and start and finish assistance. Bad Bob Baker had three flat tires, and borrowed a spare wheel from Rocky 10 miles from the finish to race. The lack of female competitors was felt.
