EDWARD JONES POINTS SERIES -- CRIPPLE CREEK TT Cripple Creek Time Trial -- Aug 20th, 2009 -- 11 miles Oh what a night! The weather was perfect with clear skies and temperatures hoovering around 60 degrees. And, as this was a time trial, no wind!! Riders left the start line with smiles one minute apart. Anywhere from 28 (yes 28!!) minutes to 47 minutes later riders came back with red, sweatie, and grimmacing (is that why they call it Cripple Creek?) faces as they struggled up the last incline to the finish line near the Parks Highway. In what proved to be one of if not the fastest fields (for average time) to tackle the Cripple Creek Course the field scorched the road. The largest field ever for FCC for a racing season finale had 25 riders, 9 of those riders were vying for a spot on the Points Series podium. Tyson Flaharty set a course record with a smokin' 28.58.78 followed very closely by the Hanneman brothers with Logan stopping the clock at 29.47.42 and Reese (freshly back from skiing in Colorado) at 31.02.82. In the ladies field Heather Best again claimed the win by more than two minutes over a charging Laura Leblanc. Heather complete the course in 36.18.51 for the win followed by Laura at 38.29.96. And continuing to she her mastery of the Cripple Creek course was Gail Koepf crossing the line at 40.08.64, narrowly missing the sub 40 minute mark. Competition for the sport men was very tight. Rick Steele edged all competitors with a time of 33.22.24. His time was followed closely by Chris Wyatt at 33.38.82 and John Petersen, fresh off his triathlon training, at 33.56.89. Super Domestiques were once again amongst the worlds best. The Cripple Creek Time Trial places the greatest demand on volunteers to monitor each turn around, the stop at Isberg intersection, and the ever required start and finish area. Each of these individuals stepped up to meet those requirements and are much appreciated; Alina Wyatt, Madeline Button, Mary Brunner, Alejandro Beltran, Sam Herreid, Lisa Ciarcell, Jeff Oatley, and Davya Flaharty filled out the volunteer contingent... and they were great!!
