MOUNTAIN BIKE STAGE RACE -- OFF ROAD RACE Alaska Coffee Roasters Mountain Bike Stage Race -- June 4,5 2010 -- 5 stages 2010 saw five stages held during two days. Day one was a hill climb, rising 1700 feet in five miles. Racers ground up Ester Dome via the road and the Equinox marathon trail. Despite the torrential rain the day before the race, the course was firm and clean. Stage two was a cross country event. Racers chugged to the top of Moose Mountain (some chug along, others sort of wheeze) and follow the powerline across the hilltops to O'Connor (a.k.a. E-battery or Lovesite). There's a fast descent to Old Murphy Dome road, with a sharp left turn which leads to more blazing descent. This descent is generally a little spooky -- the road features lots of ruts and loose gravel. Nice recipe for a wipeout. After the road heads back uphill, the course turns left into the woods onto the "Rabbit Trail". This is basically a fall line single track descent all the way to the Fort Knox power-line. At that point, racers followed the double track all the way back to Moose Mountain road. There's some mud holes along the way that generally result in some dirty bikes and wet feet. At Moose Mountain road, racers turned left and rode back to the start near the lodge/club-house. Stage 3 was an easy trials course that turned out to be more difficult than folks expected. It consisted of a few obstacles and skills that psych out and frustrate the rider. In addition to the obstacles and skills, an extra element was added to the trials this year: the bike toss. It's hard to say if there's any valuable skill displayed in throwing a 40 pound bike as far as you can, but it is entertaining to watch. The funniest toss was by the race organizer, Rocky Reifenstuhl, who could manage a scant five to nine foot range. The best toss was by Bill Hynson who managed to end up with the bike almost twenty five feet away. Stage 4 was a predicted-time event. Racers predicted how long it will take for them to ride two laps of a short course, and the difference between actual and predicted times wass the time assigned to the racers' overall time. Care was taken to avoid entanglement with campers' tents or their beer bongs. (Evidently the ultimate frisbee folks who are camping at the Moose Mountain grounds know how to party!) Stage 5 used the same short course, and was a fast miss-and-out. In a Miss-and-Out, a group of riders takes off, and after a lap, the last person to cross the lap point is out, with the remaining riders keeping going. In the next lap, the last to cross the line is out, etc. Kind of like musical chairs on bikes. The winner has 0 seconds added to their time, second place has 10 seconds, and so on.
