FCC ListServ -- Communicate with all FCC Members

OK, so it's not a real listserver, but it does get the word out. We recommend that you subscribe to it. This is a service that we've had around for a while now, and it has been invaluable. It's one of the better tools we have for alerting people to upcoming events, cycling in the news, getting volunteers together for one thing or other, and even putting together an unscheduled group ride.

Need to subscribe? Do it now.

Need to post a message? Here you go.

In May of 2009, we started archiving ListServ posts, (Huh! Novel idea!) and they are presented below.

Be sure to visit the FCC Forum.

Subject: 2010 Events Schedule - Preliminary

The schedule has been assembled and while it isn't done, it needs folks to look at it and point out what is wrong with it.

Check it out at http://www.fairbankscycleclub.org/Events/events2010.pdf

Something missing? Tell us.
Something at the wrong time? Tell us.
Want to put on an event? Tell us.

Subject: FIRST JERSEY ORDER ENDS FEB 24

A reminder, the first order period for the FCC Jersey and other clothing items ends on Feb 24. We have to receive your order either through the post office box or with a Board Member by February 24. If you are included in this order you will receive your jersey, shorts, arm warmers, etc by the end of April.

A second order more than likely will be done mid May but that order will not be back until mid to end of June.

Subject: Bike path proposal wording

I suggest that we avoid the "serious cyclist" moniker and adopt something along the lines of high-speed, and low-speed/pedestrian non-motorized traffic. Although I and many of us are "serious" there are several commuters etc...who would use the higher speed and safer bike route on the shoulder. Some may bristle at the use of "serious" and see it as a reference to a small group. I understand the use of it in this forum but in a more public venue these things are often taken out of context or seen in their worst light. I hope this doesn't come off as being nit-picky but I feel it is important. We have to convince a lot of non-cyclists and we cannot appear self important.

Subject: Chena Small Tracts MUP

I received the following email about this subject. I'm not sure exactly how to Reply to a Listserve so to make sure everyone has a chance to see it I've copied it.

My intent is making the E-motion was to get things on track to make a decision while a decision matters. I realize such a thing is fairly novel. But, it seems to me this is a case where technology can be used to our benefit.

I accept the text modifications made by Eric. Since we represent the entire community and not just the residents of that area the entire text as modified should be passed.

QUOTE---------------------------------
Fred,

I completely agree with your point of view. Bike paths, as they are called, are really multi-use paths. Walkers, dog walkers, young children on bikes, etc., are much better served by a separated path. (Skiers and dog mushers even use the one on Ballaine Road out in Goldstream Valley.) But more serious cyclists are much better served by a dedicated bike lane. The tough part is getting both.

Here's my suggested edit.

The Fairbanks Cycle Club supports construction of a Multi Use Path adjacent to Chena Small Tracts as is being proposed by residents of that area. However, we clearly state this such a path does not NOT meet the safety and transport needs of the many faster cyclists in the Fairbanks area. Many studies have shown that separated paths are more dangerous for such cyclists. So, we also recommend that a dedicated Bike Lane that is properly marked and maintained and is part of the pavement structure of the road also be added to the request.

Please note, that the last line should only be added if that's what the needs of the local area require. I don't live in the Chena Small Tracts area so I don't know if there are many serious cyclists there. Of course, a dedicated bike lane would serve anyone who might move to the area.

Eric

CLOSE Quote-----------------------------------

Since a dedicated line serves us all throughout the community and this is a State of Alaska matter we should include the entire text as modified.

Next Step:

Next step is for either Joel (Club President) or Jon Bennett (Advocacy Chair) to formally ask for more discussion and give a cutoff time for that discussion.

Then the Club either accepts or rejects the motion; just like in an in-person meeting.

If all goes well we should have a decision by the end of the week.

Subject: Chena Small Tracts MUP

I just downloaded the emails that began with Tami Seekins request for lobbying assistance. My first reaction is that we ought to help other citizens as much as we can in their lobbying efforts. By doing so we can expect help in our efforts.

My second reaction is that we need to use more appropriate terminology. What Tami is asking for is more appropriately called a Multi Use Path (MUP), not a Bike Trail or Bike Path.

She clearly describes the intended users as being just about anyone not using motorized transport. As cyclists we know that mix does not safely include higher speed road bikes and, in many cases, bicycle commuters. We also know that maintainence standards for such a MUP need not be as high as for dedicated cycle use and still be safe and useful.

It is in our best interests to support construction of a MUP in that area while, at the same time, pointing out that there is a significant part of the cycling community that is not served by that MUP.

Since the MUP does not fully meet our needs we should ask for her and her group's support in having a dedicated Bike Lane installed concurrent with the MUP.

To put it into formal motion form for action by the other members of the Advocacy Commmittee and by the Board:

"The Fairbanks Cycle Club supports construction of a Multi Use Path adjacent to Chena Small Tracts as is being proposed by residents of that area. However, we clearly state this does not meet the safety and transport needs of many cyclist in the Fairbanks area. So, we also recommend a dedicated Bike Lane that is properly marked and maintained and is part of the pavement structure of the road."

I'm not enamoured by the preceding language. So, if anyone wants to edit it feel free.

My thoughts largely echo Steves--I'm also in the "opposed to separated bike paths" group.

The general public doesn't know, understand, or care the differences between a 10 year old kid riding on a bike path at 6mph, a DUI-biker weaving down the sidewalk, and one of us on a TT bike doing 35mph. To them, it's a person on two wheels that's in their way.

As such, they want to separate us from being on "their" road. If we continue to build separated bike paths, the demographic that will lose will be those of us that consider ourselves serious cyclists.

Subject: Opposed to Chena Small Tracks bike trail

Below is an email I sent to Tami Seekins and Joe Thomas. I think it's time the bike club take a stand against bike trails and support bike lanes:

As a member of the Fairbanks Cycle Club I am opposed to separate bike paths. Separate bike lanes on an existing road, or wide shoulders are much safer for bicyclists, easier to maintain and more cost efficient. There is a lot of literature available regarding this and I am happy to research and send it to you. Personally I can give you horror stories about cars crossing blindly and at high speed coming out from driveways that cross the bike trail on Chena Pump Road and elsewhere in town. In addition, the bike trails quickly deteriorate and develop inches-wide cracks from frost heaves and roots and collect glass that's infrequently swept. For these reasons I always ride on the shoulder of Chena Pump and obey the rules of the road. If a walking trail is needed on Chena Small Tracks Road, I'm not opposed, but please don't try to get one put in under the quise of a "needed bike trail." Widened shoulders or a separate bicycle lane would be much preferable.

Subject: Chena Small Tracks Bike Path

tamiseekins@hotmail.com

Hi, My name is Tami Seekins, and I am on a mission and I'm hoping you will assist me. I got your email from the trails advisory committee webpage.

I am on a campaign to try to get a bike path/safety trail for Chena Small Tracks. It is a high use road with no shoulder and no alternate path for people, kids, snowmachines, atv etc to use.

I'm working with Senator Thomas' office, we have pictures, and a DOT construction estimate. He is willing to put in a line item request but he requires LOTS of letters of support. Unfortunately they HAVE to be received by Feb. 12th and I only have a week to get as many letters in as possible from as many people and organizations.

I'm asking that you read why this is so important and that it would move you to write a short letter of support to Senator Thomas' office

Here is his email address: senator_joe_thomas@legis.state.ak.us

Let me explain why this is so important:

I'll begin with Woodriver Elementary School. The school is situated just a short distance away. For those families living on the opposite side of Chena Small Tracks towards the river, there is NO bus service. That means, kids who ride their bikes to school or walk to school have to use a BUSY road that is shared with cars, snow machines, etc.

Again, let me reiterate, that there is NO bike bath and the road has NO shoulder. Not only is there no safe path for them to walk, there are no lights to help driver’s see small children. This is particularly dangerous during snow falls, and ice fog during our dark winters. The safety of these children should not be in jeopardy as they attempt to get to school. As the population density has increased over the last 10 years, there have been no upgrades in terms of a path or shoulder to accommodate users: both in terms of drivers, and pedestrians.

The school also likes to encourage outdoor fitness and in the spring time they encourage parents to drop their kids off at the pump house and they (teachers and kids) walk to Woodriver together - on the main road which has substantial year-round traffic. The Woodriver PTA is involved in getting a petition and letters of support from parents and is concerned about child safety.

It is also a very popular community access road. As you may know, at the end of the road is a borough park and a very popular boat launching site to the Chena river.

During the spring, summer and fall, it is very common to see people walking/running, the elderly as well as young children, mother's pushing strollers, kids on bikes, people with their pets, including riders on horseback as well as ATV users....down the road from about 6 in the morning until late hours of the evening in the summer. I have seen many close calls between pedestrians and vehicles. I have to reiterate that it is a popular road and the opportunities to be outside and to have access to the water make it again a very high use road. Safety should be our first priority.

In the winter, many cars and snow machines access the ice road via Chena small tracks. Snow and ice can make condition a bit scary if there are people walking their dogs, pulling their kids on sleds, or skiing. With the continued traffic using Chena Small tracks as their access to airport road, the traffic does not decrease during the winter months.

The potential for a naturally occurring “outdoor classroom” is possible for the students of Woodriver. Having direct access to the river provides so many opportunities to learn about nature, wildlife, ecology, soil, riparian zones etc, that it seems like a waste not to have a safe avenue for the children to be able to go and access that outdoor classroom.

In summary, the safety of all users of this road is a high priority whether you live in this area, are visiting or just accessing our naturally occuring resources. I am asking that you consider writing a letter of support to Senator Thomas indicating that you consider it important that a path be constructed down Chena Small Tracks.

Thanks so much!

Tami

Subject: Carpool to Little Su 50K/Susitna 100

Hello all, i'm wondering if anyone would like to carpool to the Little Su 50K/Susitna 100 next weekend? I noticed a few Fairbanks folks on the roster. I am planning on driving and can take one other person with a bike or skis. I am planning on staying with friends in Anchorage, and then driving to the start early on the 13th. I will leave Fairbanks around 8:00 am on Friday Feb. 12 and head back on the 14th or 15th. My schedule is pretty flexible so let me know if you want to carpool and we'll see what we can work out.
