It’s supposed to get really cold in the next couple of days but then warm up! Time to plan a fatbike ride! Winter fatbike tours are a great way to meet people, get some exercise, and learn about the winter trails around Fairbanks.
Beaver Sports has occasional demo rides and is planning one this coming Sunday: www.facebook.com/events/2247501552242677/
There are also several weekly fatbike tours. Below are the ones we know about. If you know of any more please contact Eric Troyer ( fbxtrails@gmail.com).
Note: Rides are weather- and ride-leader dependent. Check the Goldstream Sports Facebook page for updates about their rides.
GOLDSTREAM SPORTS TUESDAY NIGHT RIDES
*FCC membership not required*
Both start at 7 p.m. from Goldstream Sports. Make sure to bring bike lights, water and snacks. Estimate ride distances and times are dependent on weather and trail conditions:
– The more Relaxed Ride is led by Larry Hodges and/or Rachael Kvapil. They welcome intermediate riders. The rides usually last about 1.5 hours, and go around 10 miles. – The more Hardcore Ride is led by Joel Buth and/or Tyson Flaharty. Riders on this one need at least advanced intermediate skills. You need to be fit AND have good winter biking skills. The rides usually last about 1.5-2 hours and go 12 to 15 miles.
GOLDSTREAM SPORTS PUB RIDE
*FCC membership not required*
Starts each Wednesday at 6 p.m. from HooDoo Brewing Company ( www.hoodoobrew.com/). Beginners welcome. These mostly flat rides usually go around 10 miles and last about 1.5 hours. (Need to be back to make last call!) Led by Forrest Sutton and Bill Hrinko with help from Larry Hodges and Rachael Kvapil.

SUNDAY RIDE
These informal fatbike rides start each Sunday at noon from Ivory Jack’s parking lot in the Goldstream Valley. These are low-key but still strenuous. Depending on who shows up, these rides can last 3 hours or more and involve a lot of climbing.
