*UPDATE ON STATE HOUSE BILL 8 RE E-BIKES*Here’s an update of State House Bill 8: “An Act relating to electric-assisted bicycles.” It’s from Rep. Ashely Carrick’s April 21 newsletter. Rep. Carrick introduced the bill.
On Monday, by a vote of 39-1, the House of Representatives passed House Bill 8. I have discussed this bill in previous editions of the Carrick Capitol Connection. To briefly recap, this bill defines electric-assisted bicycles in Alaska Statute, specifying that e-bikes should be regulated as bicycles. The bill also provides municipalities and state agencies the ability to limit electric-assisted bicycle usage on paths, sidewalks, and other areas in whatever way is appropriate for that community or agency. This bill was considered by the Senate State Affairs Committee yesterday and will hopefully be heard again soon. I have worked on variations of this bill since 2019 when it was first introduced by my predecessor and former boss Representative Adam Wool. I will continue to help this bill pedal forward and, honestly, it’s WHEELY exciting to pass my first bill in the House!
