The FCC SOS ride last Sunday was a success despite some new snow. See the report below. The SOS rides will be taking a couple of weeks off as the next two Sundays are Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

SOS Report

Three brave souls showed up to follow ride leader Travis through some fresh powder along the trans-Alaska pipeline starting at the end of Love Rd.

We took a turn onto a  recently packed snowmachine trail across Steele Creek and then connected with some well packed dog mushing trails. We almost immediately had to jump off the trail to allow a friendly dog team to pass. We then continued around a lollipop-shaped loop through spruce forest and across some long, frozen oxbow lakes, which trace abandoned channels of the Chena or Little Chena rivers.

The low December sun was particularly beautiful and a sundog was even spotted from one open area.

We passed two more dog teams and returned to the pipeline access road, which had been plowed moments before by a large grader. After a few more photos the group all decided to take the nicely plowed road back to the cars to enjoy some potato chips and to get back to other Sunday projects and chores.

Overall a great 8.6 mile cruise on flat trails with only a little struggle in the recent powder.
