UPDATE 09/14
Since originally posting this, we have learned that the ordinance will be introduced at tonight's meeting, but will not be discussed or have any public hearing. They will discuss it at some upcoming work sessions and meetings over the next two weeks. Apologies for the wrong information. However, you can still commit to the council and mayor via the links below.
ORIGINAL POST
The Fairbanks City Council will consider an ordinance on Monday that attempts to address the increased use of e-bikes and e-motos in Fairbanks city limits.
Ordinance 6355 would clarify and add definitions to better differentiate e-bikes and e-motos. It would also amend city law regarding driving motorized vehicles on public property and the right of the city to impound vehicles.
This is an important step toward dealing with the increased misuse of e-motos and the confusion by some about the difference between an e-moto versus an e-bike. Cycling advocates in Fairbanks are encourage to attend the meeting and show support for the ordinance or otherwise speak about it. At least two FCC members are already planning to be there to show support for the ordinance.
Monday's council meeting starts at 6:30 pm. It is held at 800 Cushman Street.
Currently, the ordinance is on the consent agenda, which means it will not have a separate public hearing. (All items on the consent agenda are voted on at the same time.) If that remains the case, people can still comment at the beginning of the meeting under Citizens' Comments. However, if the council pulls the ordinance from the consent agenda, then it will have a separate public meeting.
The ordinance is currently numbered 14d in the agenda. You can see the agenda HERE.
Clicking on the ordinance number will bring up the actual ordinance wording, which is later in the agenda packet.
If you can't make it to the meeting, you can contact the council HERE.
