The Eldorado Out-And-Back

By: Liam Wescott

This is a pretty straightforward out-and-back that can be done in about an hour and a half by a determined rider or group of riders.

Drive out the Steese up to and past Cleary Summit. Roughly a half mile or so past Cleary Summit the road levels off and there is a parking spot to the left with a dirt road going down the hill and one going straight up the hill. Either one goes out and dead-ends. The route described and mapped here is the one going down the hill.

You drop down a fast descent for about a mile. Then the road forks. Take the left fork for a steep descent down into the valley. Follow it out for the next four miles or so past some mining claims and various pieces of mining equipment. You will cross a creek and finally the road will peter out in the bog six miles from where you start. Then you turn around and go back the way you came.

Total distance is around 12 miles.
