Basic map
This is a grinding climb, no doubt. As mapped, it is only that -- a hill
climb. Obviously, you'll turn around a the top and come back. Exercise
caution though -- the hill is steep and there is plenty of loose gravel.
Start at the Pedro Monument (around 6 miles out the Steese from the big
intersection in Fox) and climb the hill. Turn around and come back.
Options:
- Start in Fox, parking at the Fox Roadhouse. Sample a beer at the
Silver Gulch brewing company after the ride.
- Don't stop at the top of the climb -- descend down the other side
and ride out to the Chatanika Lodge. You can view a gold dredge there.
- Use a mountain bike. Ride up to Cleary Summit, and turn left onto
the dirt road there. You intersect with another dirt road, turn right.
This is a big dirt road with big trucks. Stay out of their way. Turn left
at the next road, to go towards Pedro Dome. Turn left at the big "Y"
intersection. Follow this dirt road for about a mile and a half.
KEEP A WATCHFUL EYE for a turn to your left onto a dirt track. Follow this
all the way to the Elliot Highway (when in doubt go straight. Look
at the sun and get your bearing -- you want to be traveling southwest.)
At the Elliot turn left and ride back to Fox.
